Lindsay Sandiford : Brit nan on Death Row in Bali ‘just wants to die’

A British grandmother on death row in Bali has spoken of her harrowing final wish as she awaits her execution by firing squad.

Lindsay Sandiford was sentenced to death after being arrested in 2013 trying smuggle £1.6 million of cocaine into Indonesia.

The punishment in Indonesia for drug smuggling offences of this severity is death by firing squad, the Mirror reports.

Prisoners condemned to death can choose to either sit or stand in front of a squad of soliders who then shoot the prisoner dead, aiming for their heart to ensure quick death.

If a prisoner somehow manages to survive the initial salvo, the commander shoots them in the head.

Sandiford, 65, is still waiting for her execution date as Indonesia does not carry out the sentences very often, with some prisoners on death row for more than ten years.

She made the decision to move to India in 2021 after separating from her husband, and was arrested as she arrived in Bali from Bangkok on May 19 2012 after cocaine was discovered in her bags.

The former legal secretary initially claimed that she had been made to smuggle the Class A drugs by a gang who had threatened her family if she said no.

But she changed her story after being informed that she would receive the death penalty if she was convicted, informing officers that she had been asked to carry the drugs British antiques dealer Julian Ponder.

Despite agreeing to participate in a sting operation to catch Ponder she was still later charged, convicted, and then sentenced to death on January 22 2013.

Whilst in prison Sandiford has spent her time knitting various items which she sells to raise money for legal fees.

Whilst in jail, she has also befriended killer Heather Mack, who served 10 years for the murder of her mother Seila von Wiese-Mack, who was then stuffed into a suitcase by her boyfriend.

Mack revealed that Sandiford has become more and more reclusive while in prison, becoming difficult to speak to and often snapping for no reason.

She said: “She spends all day pretty much alone in her cell and doesn’t mix so much with the other prisoners.”

The killer also revealed Sandiford has just one final haunting wish.

She said: “She has said she wants to die.”

Indeed, Sandiford herself said: “It won’t be a hard thing for me to face anymore.

“It’s not particularly a death I would choose but then again I wouldn’t choose dying in agony from cancer either.”

She has also said she feels blessed to have been able to watch her two sons grow up and meet her grandchildren.
